22-year-old man shot dead outside Ensley convenience store


A 22-year-old man was killed late Christmas night when he was gunned down at a grocery store in West Birmingham.

Birmingham police identified the victim as Donvan Mykal Cash.

West Ward officers responded at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday at the 40th Street Grocery store at 1200 40th Street in Ensley, following a report of one person being shot. The town’s gunshot detection system – Shot Spotter – also alerted officers to numerous shots fired in this area.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police have arrived to find Unresponsive Cash near the store entrance. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation suggests that someone was firing shots in the area and one of the shells allegedly hit the victim. It is not known at this time if the victim was the intended target.

No one is in custody.

Cash is one of two men killed in Birmingham on Christmas Day. At around 11 a.m. on Saturday, a 42-year-old man was shot dead upon his arrival at the family home in Hooper City.

Cash is the 132nd homicide victim in Birmingham in 2021. Of these, 14 have been found justifiable and are therefore not considered criminals.

Across Jefferson County, there have been 212 homicides, including 132 in Birmingham.
