Typically, when older hit songs leave the Mediabase pop radio airplay chart due to recurring rules, they are “finished” increasing in format. They could still be broadcast – radio rarely completely drops high profile singles – but they are unlikely to hold, let alone rise, on the chart.
When Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” looked like it might become an exception to that rule in mid-2021, Mediabase instituted a policy allowing recurring songs to re-enter the chart if they had four consecutive weeks of airplay gains and charted in the chart. Top 10 for number of laps. Returning to the chart, “Levitating” ended up going all the way to No. 1.
In late 2021, Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” became the second song to return to the chart under the new policy. Dropped prematurely from heavy radio rotation last summer, “Heat Waves” has continued to generate significant buzz and perform well on digital platforms. The excitement eventually inspired many radio programmers to renew their support for the single, allowing the song to gain enough airplay for a comeback.
This week, it follows in the footsteps of “Levitating” by reaching #1. Up one spot from last week’s position, “Heat Waves” claims the top spot thanks to its ~17,875 tracking period rounds (+859).
Adele’s “Easy On Me,” which spent seven weeks at No. 1, drops to No. 2 this week. The single “30” received ~17,199 spins during the January 16-22 tracking period (-959).
Doja Cat’s “Need To Know” takes 3rd place, “STAY” by The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber remains in 4th place, and Ed Sheeran’s “Shhivers” retains 5th place.
