Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop card payments discontinued in 2022

Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will see their card payments stopped on the eShop from 2022 as Japanese users cannot purchase transit cards.

In an announcement, the Japanese company announced the discontinuation of some services for the systems. The 3DS and Wii U eShop will lose its ability to process card payments. Features related to this system will also stop working at some point.

This underlines Nintendo’s slowness in phasing out its old devices. Additionally, removing features will help discourage fans from buying older consoles.

Stop online payments for services

In an ad, Nintendo’s customer service Twitter in Japan announced that it was shutting down its card payment service for 3DS and Wii U. The tweet specifically announced that they would stop transporting payment options through systems.

“A notice of ‘Termination of Use of Credit Cards and Electronic Money for Transportation on Nintendo 3DS Series and Nintendo eShop for Wii U’ has been posted,” the tweet noted.
Within the blog, they note that users will not be able to purchase transit cards through the eShop. The termination itself will begin on January 18 of next year, after which users will no longer be able to make payments.

“We are announcing that processing of credit cards and e-money for transport on the Nintendo 3DS series and Nintendo eShop for Wii U will end at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2022,” the post said, translated via Google. Drive.

“You will not be able to add balances using Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Series e-money and credit cards from the Nintendo 3DS Series after termination of services. “

The other functionalities related to the online payment system will stop soon

The elimination of online payment methods such as credit cards and Suica [railway] cards in Japan is a sign of abandonment. The company has considered stopping much of its services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Among other things, some features of the systems will also stop working. For 3DS, the Internet browser filter for both devices will be enabled by default permanently. Users who turn it off at any time will still have options.

The JOYSOUND Karaoke for Wii U will also stop renewing 90-day tickets effective October 26. Everything before or during this date will work as is. Other services that rely on auto-renewal, such as posting to Youtube, will also cease to operate on October 26.

Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are gearing up for a phased release. Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that they would stop all repairs to their 3DS models.
