Why Every Gearhead Should Drive a Porsche 718 Cayman

Fast forward to 2022, the 718 Caymans is currently in its third generation. The 718 Cayman is the first time the car has featured a supercharged four-cylinder engine, although the naturally aspirated flat-six returned to the later GTS and GT4 models.

Like the rest of the contemporary Porsche family, the 718 Cayman has a sleek exterior appearance. Up front, the Cayman features a sleek hood and splendid air intakes, giving the car a wider and bolder appeal. The front of the 718 GTS 4.0 version has improved air intakes and a black front spoiler. You will also benefit from tinted front lights on the new 718 GTS 4.0 model. Opting for the $3,050 SportDesign package gives the Cayman, T, S a special front fascia and front spoiler. Or you could spend $1,890 for the painted exterior package and have every corner of your car body-colored.


The wheel arches are wider than ever and accommodate 20-inch wheels. The side air intakes not only provide air to cool the engine, but also contribute to the car’s aerodynamic shape and performance. These features, combined with the smooth side panels, enhance the side profile of the 718 Cayman and accentuate the mid-engine layout. The sleek rear spoiler does a better job of improving the car’s handling capabilities. Adapted to the speed, the wing deploys automatically when the pilot points at 125 km/h.

The 718 Cayman is offered in several powertrains

Porsche offers the 2022 718 Cayman in five versions: base, T, S, GTS 4.0 and GT4. Thus, there is almost a model for every reducer in store. The low-end base and Model T both use a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four that produces 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. While the Cayman T is lighter, both models sprint to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, with a top speed of 170 mph.

The S model is equipped with a 2.5-liter flat-four, which develops 350 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to its engine, its acceleration time from 60 mph drops to 4.6 seconds, giving it a top speed of 177 mph. The GTS 4.0 version, as its name suggests, uses a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, with 400 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque.


The GT4 also equips a flat-six but generates up to 414 hp. All 718 Caymans send this power to the rear wheels and, with the exception of the T version, can be equipped with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK automatic transmission.

The Cayman boasts of a sporty interior

Inside, the Cayman carries the DNA of its 981 and 982 Cayman predecessors, offering a luxurious and sporty appeal, as Porsche interiors should. The Porsche 718 Cayman has a reasonably spacious cabin, providing occupants with a decent amount of head and legroom. A 7-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker stereo, USB ports, satellite radio, HD radio and Apple CarPlay are all standard across the range. In terms of luggage, the Cayman offers 9.7 cubic feet of space in the rear trunk and 5.2 in the front cargo hold.

Character and performance to suit every gearbox

All 718 Cayman versions are very similar in terms of features. But the huge difference is in performance and fuel consumption. The performance of the Porsche 718 Cayman is indisputable. Thanks to its mid-engine configuration, adaptive sports suspension and grippy tires, the Porsche 718 Cayman offers the best possible ride quality, offering exceptional balance and stability on the most twisty roads. The Cayman T and Cayman S are the most sought-after versions. But it all depends on your preference.


The Model T balances fuel economy and performance fairly well, with the addition of some useful suspension upgrades. The S version has a bigger engine with 50 extra horsepower and some stylish upgrades. It also benefits from Porsche Torque Vectoring and selectable drive modes, further enhancing its performance.

The 718 Cayman GT4 is at the top of the range, offering a cool interior and performance upgrades. If you love high-powered Porsches, the GT4 will be your closest companion. However, the turbocharged six-cylinder is a bit of a gas guzzler. On the bright side, it comes standard with the Sport Chrono pack, which adds additional drive modes, a stopwatch and launch control.
